Wisconsin's longest running marathon, the Paavo Nurmi Marathon is known for the course that runs through forests and fields, along rivers and lakes, numerous hills and elevation changes and passing a cemetery or two!!!!  Beginning in the quiet village of Upson, Wisconsin on the 2nd Saturday of August for the past 45 years and ending on Hurley's famous Silver Street participants are greeted and encouraged along the way by hundreds of volunteers.

The weekend kicks off on Friday with the traditional packet pickup at the Hurley K-12 School on Rangeview Drive 10 am - 6pm.  Participants, family and friends meet here to enjoy the famous Spaghetti Feed sponsored by the Hurley American Legion from 4pm- 7pm.  There are a few vendors that will be on hand with samples and information at the Expo:  Hobby Wheel, ItWorks, Iron County Health Department, Hurley Area Chamber of Commerce and Hurley Area Lioness.  Check back for more vendors to be added.

There is something for everyone to join in the fun with the Kids Race.  Beginning @ 5:30 right on the school campus, kids of all ages are invited to participate.  There are two categories --- 1 lap around the track or a 1 mile run.  Participants will receive an official "Paavo Nurmi Marathon Kids Race" keepsake backpack.  Free to participants. At 6:00 pm everyone is invited to the 1st "Show Your Colors 5k Run / Walk" .  Start and finish is at the School.  Contact Melissa DeCarlo at decarlom@ironcountywi.org for more details.  Registration forms are at the bottom of this event page.
Packet Pickup:

If you are a pre-registered participant, with registration fees paid in full and are unable to make it to the registration/packet pickup on Friday, August 8 we will have Volunteers on hand at the start line(s) on Saturday, August 9 to assist you.  Please remember to allow for extra time in the morning to pick up your packet.  

Transportation is provided to the start line in Upson for the Full Marathon, 2 -Person and 5 -Person Relay teams.  Busses start at 6:00 am from the Iron Horse Trail Head at the corner of 5th Avenue & Silver Street in Hurley.    Bussing is also provided to Half Marathon participants to Gile beginning at 7:00am from the Iron Horse Trail Head at the corner of 5th Avenue & Silver Street in Hurley.  If you need assistance with parking, there will be volunteers to answer your questions.  

5 Person Relay Teams
The following safety rules are to be followed and respected:  Each team will receive a sign to place in their vehicle designating as an authorized relay team vehicle.  Team runner who starts at Mile 5, needs to be at the Start Line in Upson by 7:20 AM on Saturday, August 9 at which time volunteers will load runners on busses to go to the Mile 5 Split.  Team Runner who FINISHES at Mile 5 Split, will load on busses to be transported to Mile 10 Split where they can resume traveling with their team.  NO TRAFFIC ALLOWED ON COUNTY E.  Event staff reserves the right to disqualify any team who refuses to abide by the safety rules adopted by the Paavo Nurmi Marathon Committee.  There will be ample Police Patrol as well as Ambulance Patrol on this portion of the course.  

If you are staying at the Days Inn, Hurley bussing is provided from the hotel at 6:15 am.  Please note:  THIS IS THE ONLY BUS DEPARTING FROM THIS LOCATION.  

IMPORTANT NOTE:  There are LIMITED facilities at the start line.  Please plan accordingly.

Course Information

Aid Stations are located along the course at Mile 3, 6, 9, 12, 13.1, 15, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25.  VOLUNTEERS will be on hand at these stations with water, gatorade, ice and sponges.  At the later stations there will be bananas, oranges and limited first aid supplies.  If you are in need of something along the way, let a volunteer know.  If you have specific race drinks, gels, powders etc. that you require, label with your bib number and mile that you wish to have it left at, leave it at the start line and a volunteer will get it to the right aid station personnel.  

Any participant who wishes to have items transported from the start line to the finish line area MUST place the items in the clear bag provided in your race packet with label on it, leave in designated truck at the start line and pick up at the Iron Nugget Restaurant (located across from the finish line area).  ABSOLUTELY NO ITEMS WILL BE BROUGHT BACK TO THE FINISH LINE UNLESS PLACED IN CLEAR BAG AND LABELED 

Porta Potties are located at the following areas:  Start Line (Upson), 5 Mile Split, 10 Mile Split, 13.1 Mile (Gile -Half Marathon Start), 15 Mile Split, 20 Mile Split and Finish Line area.

The Paavo welcomes spectators along the course only in designated areas.  If you are traveling with a participant, please speak with an event volunteer for information on safe viewing areas.  The Paavo strives to ensure the safety of all participants and volunteers.  Thank you for your cooperation.
